Argentina’s lithium goes digital in world-first move
San Juan’s mining sector is pioneering a more transparent and efficient approach to resource management

Lithium is often called "white gold" for its value in the global clean energy transition. Now, Argentina is turning it into digital gold. Atómico 3 has launched the world’s first tokenized lithium asset, reshaping the mining industry.
The initiative, confirmed by Atómico 3 CEO Pablo Rutigliano, marks a shift for San Juan, a province long known for metal mining. By embracing digital assets, Argentina aims to enhance transparency, attract investment, and establish itself as a key player in the global lithium market.
Tokenizing lithium converts its value into blockchain-based digital assets, improving traceability, legal security, and competitiveness in the mining sector. This method modernizes resource extraction and adapts to regional needs, ensuring Argentina remains at the forefront of industry innovation.
Beyond economic benefits, tokenization supports sustainable development by transforming raw materials into investable assets. However, its success will depend on regulatory support and market adoption.
Atómico 3 has already signed agreements with mining asset owners in San Juan province to tokenize lithium deposits. The initial five-year contract covers 50,000 hectares at the Mogna Salt Flats, a move that could redefine Argentina’s mining landscape.
The lithium mining project at Mogna Salt Flat
Located in the Angaco Department, approximately 100 km from the provincial capital, the Mogna Salt Flat is a strategic site for lithium mining in Argentina. The first phase of the project will focus on exploring 10,000 hectares, with ongoing geological studies assessing its full potential.
Access to the site is available via Provincial Route No. 63 and compacted dirt roads, although only 10% of the roads are paved. The region features an arid environment with a dry continental climate, experiencing average temperatures of 25.8°C in January and 9.2°C in July. Annual precipitation levels range from 68 mm to 200 mm in mountainous areas, making water resource management crucial for recharging aquifers in the Angaco intermontane basin.
"If we want Argentina to truly establish itself as a global leader in mining, the key is to develop the tokenization of mining assets. This will ensure transparency, visibility, and scalability for the entire country," stated Pablo Rutigliano.
A new era for lithium mining in Argentina
The lithium tokenization initiative in San Juan represents a major milestone for Argentina's mining industry and introduces an innovative model for strategic resource management. Through this project, Atómico 3 is opening doors to new economic and technological opportunities, reshaping traditional mining investment.
With exploration underway at the Mogna Salt Flats, Argentina is taking a bold step toward integrating lithium mining with digital asset markets. However, the project's long-term impact will depend on regulatory support and industry adoption.
