Cryptocurrency has made its way from tech forums to the pages of Guinness World Records. But does this signal its rise to the mainstream—or proof that it’s still finding its place?

From Bitcoin’s first commercial transaction to records like pet food donations, these milestones highlight how crypto continues to make an impact in unexpected ways.

Here are some of the most surprising and significant crypto-related achievements featured in the world’s most famous record book.

1. Bitcoin: First cryptocurrency

Guinness World Records recognizes Bitcoin as the first decentralized cryptocurrency, the first blockchain, and the oldest cryptocurrency. Created by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto in 2008, Bitcoin officially launched in January 2009 when Nakamoto mined the first block and released its open-source code.

Bitcoin’s influence continues to grow, shaping financial markets and inspiring the development of countless other cryptocurrencies.

2. Two pizzas: Bitcoin’s first purchase

Bitcoin’s first commercial transaction took place in May 2010, a moment also noted by Guinness. Early Bitcoin user Laszlo Hanyecz offered 10,000 BTC for two pizzas. A fellow enthusiast accepted the deal, spending $25 to buy the pizzas and receiving the Bitcoin in exchange.

At the time, 10,000 BTC was worth $41. Today, those coins would be valued at around $1.05 billion. This transaction became a symbol of Bitcoin’s journey from obscurity to global recognition, celebrated annually by the crypto community as Bitcoin Pizza Day.

3. Baby Doge: Record pet food donation

The memecoin Baby Doge earned a Guinness World Record for donating nearly 37,000 kg of pet food in a 24-hour period. Partnering with Best Friends Animal Society, the donations were distributed to over 30 charities on National Rescue Dog Day.

“Setting the world record for most pet food donated in 24 hours is amazing news for the Baby Doge Community and such a great honor for us to help feed these animals,” a Baby Doge spokesperson said in an official release.

4. STEPN: Fitness record-holder

STEPN, a fitness-focused crypto app, set two Guinness World Records for the most participants completing a remote one-mile distance. Over 42,000 users joined in 24 hours, while nearly 8,000 participated in a single hour.

The app combines fitness incentives with social engagement, encouraging participants to stay active while interacting with its platform.

5. Cryptokitties: First NFTs

Cryptokitties, one of the first blockchain games, is recognized as hosting the first tradeable NFTs. Launched in 2017, it introduced many users to NFTs and remains a foundational project in blockchain gaming.

These Guinness World Records highlight the multifaceted ways crypto is making its mark, from practical innovations to community-driven initiatives. Whether these achievements signal mainstream acceptance or crypto’s ongoing evolution, they underline the industry’s growing cultural and technological significance.
