Some crypto projects are designed for fun and innovation, but others are built with a higher purpose—saving lives.

By leveraging blockchain technology, initiatives like QUAKECore and Hala Systems are addressing critical global challenges. These range from earthquake detection to warning civilians of impending war crimes. Their work showcases the potential of crypto to make a meaningful difference beyond just finance or investment returns.

QUAKECore: A decentralized disaster detection system

The QUAKECore Network is revolutionizing disaster preparedness through a system that detects seismic events like earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions. At its core are devices called QUAKE Devices, which act like advanced smoke detectors but are specifically built to sense seismic activity.

When these devices detect an earthquake, they send alerts to help people take immediate action. QUAKECore operates as a decentralized network, meaning anyone can manage and operate these devices without relying on a central authority. This setup also rewards participants with tokens for contributing to the network, incentivizing data collection and sharing.

Rüdiger Strack, co-founder of QUAKECore, explained to Forbes: “Centralized alert systems often fail to meet the demands of modern disaster response… By decentralizing seismic data collection and incentivizing participation, we’re building a network that saves lives while offering value to contributors and data buyers alike.”

Hala Systems: A warning protocol against war crimes

Hala Systems, a social enterprise, focuses on protecting civilians in conflict zones. Its tools provide early warnings for airstrikes and other threats, aiming to reduce casualties and trauma.

However, the rise of fake and misleading information posed a challenge. John Jaeger, CEO of Hala Systems, said in a press release: “Online information can be easily manipulated and faked, and yet it informs crucial decisions and impacts lives.” To address this, Hala partnered with Hedera and blockchain firm Consensys to make its data tamper-proof and trustworthy.

Hala’s Sentry Early Warning System has been used as an airstrike alert tool in Syria, helping save lives and reducing casualties by 20 to 27%, according to Consensys. One Syrian civilian shared: “My family is alive because I logged in, got this message, and moved from my house. The house got blown up. My neighbors got killed.”

Hala Systems’ adoption of blockchain has enhanced the security and reliability of its warnings, safeguarding millions in conflict zones.

Blockchain for saving lives

QUAKECore and Hala Systems demonstrate blockchain’s ability to go beyond finance, providing life-saving solutions in crises. With features like decentralization and transparency, blockchain is proving its worth in disaster management and conflict zones.

As technology evolves, more life-saving applications are likely to emerge, offering hope and protection in the face of emergencies.
