Seven tips to help you make money with crypto

When investing in crypto, it’s easy to get swept up in the headlines, hype, and the promise of life-changing gains. The space moves fast, and everyone seems to have a hot tip or a winning coin. But behind every success story is rarely luck alone instead, it’s usually a result of smart strategies, consistent habits, and disciplined decision-making over time.

Here are seven principles that can help you build a more thoughtful, long-term approach to crypto investing.

1. Research the fundamentals before you invest

Before investing in any crypto project, it’s crucial to understand its fundamentals. Take time to research the founding and development team, real-world use cases, key competitors, and the strength of its community.

Also consider the token’s utility, network security, and what sets it apart from similar projects. Solid research can help investors identify projects with real potential – rather than just hype.

It’s also important to be cautious of celebrity endorsements. In 2024, several public figures – including Caitlyn Jenner and President Donald Trump – launched their own memecoins. Despite the buzz surrounding these assets, most celebrity coins had fallen by as much as 78% from their all-time highs as of February 10, 2025, according to Messari.

In the end, when investing in crypto, solid fundamentals still outweigh hype.

2. Use dollar-cost averaging to stay consistent

Dollar-cost averaging (DCA) involves investing a fixed amount on a regular schedule, no matter the price. Instead of trying to time the market, DCA helps smooth out the ups and downs by spreading out your purchases over time. The goal isn’t quick profits – it’s steady accumulation at an average cost.

For example, buying $100 worth of Bitcoin every month means you’ll get fewer satoshis, the smallest unit of BTC, when prices are high and more when prices are low. Over time, this can lower the average cost compared to making a single big purchase all at once.

3. Prioritize wallet security and protect your crypto

Crypto is stored in wallets, and how you store it matters. Cold wallets (offline hardware wallets) offer stronger protection than hot wallets, which stay connected to the internet. While both have their place, cold wallets reduce risks like hacking through offline storage and encryption.

It’s also essential to securely store the recovery phrase, which is the series of words used to regain access to the wallet if the device is lost or the password is forgotten. For maximum safety, this phrase should be kept offline and never stored digitally.

4. Follow crypto news and regulation updates

The crypto space is rapidly evolving, and regulations play a big role in shaping its future. Major policy changes can affect adoption, market access, and asset prices overnight.

While some countries are working towards clearer rules – treating crypto as currency, securities, or both – others remain uncertain. Sudden crackdowns can trigger sharp price drops and limit investors’ ability to liquidate their holdings. Keeping up with regulatory news, especially within one’s jurisdiction, is essential for making informed decisions.

5. Master your emotions and avoid FOMO/FUD

Emotions can be a major threat to smart crypto investing. FOMO (fear of missing out) and FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt) often cloud judgement, leading to poor timing and costly mistakes. A recent Kraken survey found that 63% of crypto investors in the US think that emotional decisions have hurt their portfolios, while 81% and 84% admitted to making choices driven by FUD and FOMO, respectively.

Building emotional resilience requires patience and discipline, but it’s key to long-term success. It helps investors stay steady during market swings and view setbacks as part of the process. That’s the essence of trading psychology, which covers the mental and emotional factors that affect trading behavior. Overall, it is important to learn how to manage emotions so that they don’t manage you.

6. Understand how crypto and blockchain work

Grasping the basics of blockchain and cryptocurrency can go a long way. Understanding how blockchain networks function, the role of consensus mechanisms, and the importance of smart contracts can provide valuable insight into a project’s potential.

For example, Bitcoin operates as a deflationary asset, with its supply decreasing over time through a process called halving. This event, which occurs every four years – the most recent on April 20, 2024 – helps mitigate inflationary pressure and can impact Bitcoin’s long-term value.

7. Learn the market cycle and time your moves

Just like traditional markets, crypto markets are also bound by cycles. These cycles – driven by factors like regulation, demand, investor behavior, and tech developments – influence sentiment and price movements.

The cycle begins with the accumulation phase, where prices are low and investors start patiently building positions. This is followed by the markup phase, where optimism takes over, driving prices higher as media attention and trading volume increase.

Next comes the distribution phase, typically the market’s peak, where early investors begin selling their assets. Finally, the cycle ends with the markdown phase, which is characterized by price drops and bearish sentiment as selling pressure outweighs demand.

By understanding this cycle, investors can better navigate the market, whether they choose to HODL (hold on for dear life) or make strategic moves during key moments.

Successful crypto investing requires more than just chasing the next big trend or hoping for quick gains. By sticking to sound principles, investors can navigate the volatility of the market and make more thoughtful decisions that align with their goals. Patience, consistency, and strategy are key to turning crypto investments into lasting success.
